Mooney is out! But not until the end of season 1 of the hit FOX TV show Gotham.
In a recent interview with Extra!, actress Jada Pinkett Smith revealed that her character, Fish Mooney, will not be returning for season 2 of Gotham. She also gave a hint that her character will be a part of “an awesome finale,” teasing that it will be worth watching…not that any of us will be skipping the Gotham finale anyway.
We Should Have Seen This Coming
Though her character created quite a splash from the beginning of Gotham, ever since her failed attempt to oust and replace Don Falcone, Fish Mooney—a completely original character created solely for the show—hasn’t been as interesting as she once was. Sure, there have been some exciting moments along the way as we’ve watched her rise to a position in management at the medical facility run by Dr. Dulmacher, but for the most part, that storyline has yet to showcase the Mooney we all became acquainted with in the first half of season. All of the other characters are growing and developing, while her character has been particularly stagnated as of late. But then again, maybe that was a part of the plan all along as Pinkett Smith alluded to in her interview.
According to Pinkett Smith, her year is up and now she’s done, implying that perhaps she was only under a year contract with the show to begin with. Who knows, but one thing is for sure, now that we know her character won’t be back in season 2, there will high expectations for her exit.
Rising Expectations
With Mooney’s eminent and forthcoming death, this could be a huge turning point for the show and her character. And while “an awesome finale” sounds quite intriguing, until we actually see how it will play out, we won’t know how awesome it truly is. Until then, we can only speculate that the current Mooney storyline is indeed building up to something good and worthy of the wait.
Will there be any more casting shake-ups on the set of Gotham before the premiere of season 2? Stay tuned, I bet Mooney isn’t the only one who will be forced to “pay the piper” in the season 1 finale.
