Hannah and Tahir share a kiss.

Review: Shelter

Some films of the past create imagery of the homeless as weary souls with kind hearts, but what happens when you make a film based on true life and not a fairy tale hidden behind Hollywood romance?

First off let me start by saying that this film is one of the best examples of drama that I have ever seen portrayed on the silver screen. Jennifer Connolly  co-stars as Hannah. A mysterious woman that attracts Nigerian born Muslim Immigrant Tahir, played by the very talented Anthony Mackie who are both homeless in New York City. Tahir sleeps next to Hannah and he becomes obsessed with her and begins following her, and even saves her from trying to commit suicide because of the situation she’s in and her past.

Dink
Hannah Begs For Change.

During the film we find out that Tahir is seeing his local Mosque leader who wants him to forgive himself for what he’s done, yet he finds redemption by helping out Hannah, who is an heroin addict and acquires money by doing sexual favors to dealers. Tahir slowly weans Hannah off of the heroin and slowly gets her life back on track.

Hannah Cares
Hannah cares for Tahir in his time of need.

Without giving away the plot to the ending of the film, I will tell you that after the triumphs and falls they both go through makes them become even more closer with an emotional ending that is guaranteed to shed a few tears.

5/5

The acting and plot are superb in this film, and I would highly recommend this film to any Drama fan.
