Suicide Squad

Last week, in an exciting announcement, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment revealed it’s going to release a series of movies through 2020, starting with “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad” in 2016. Today, Empire released a story with David Ayer, the director of “Suicide Squad,” and it revealed some more information about the movie.

What Is The Suicide Squad?

Let’s face it: Suicide Squad isn’t DC Comics most well-known team. The black ops team’s official name is Task Force X and is made up of supervillains out of Belle Reve prison, who are working for the government in exchange for reduced sentences. They essentially undertake suicide missions, which led to the team’s nickname. It looks like the movie will follow the villain story line from the comics, as Ayer describes it as “a Dirty Dozen with supervillains.” Having said this, Ayer adds, “Then I can ask the question, ‘Does a movie really need good guys?’” If DC and Ayer play their cards right, the answer will be “no.”

Who Is Going To Be In It?

According to ScreenRant, it has been rumored that this iteration of Suicide Squad will be led by Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and Vixen. The rest of team will include Blockbuster, Jaculi, Mindboggler and Multiplex, with Ryan Gosling, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, and Will Smith reportedly meeting and being courted by Warner Bros.

Empire asked Ayer about casting for a character like Captain Boomerang, a racist, Australian villain, who’s even willing to let his fellow team members die in the comics:  “Like one would cast any other role,” Ayer rebutted. “I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m going to do what I do in my typical fever dream of directing.” This would indicate that the rumors about Captain Boomerang are true, but Ayer didn’t reveal any more information about casting.

The current comic book series, “New Suicide Squad,” which started in July of this year, features Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Deathstroke, Black Manta, and Joker’s Daughter (Duela Dent). Considering the rumors above, the movie will pull from older iterations of the team. However, there’s a strong case to be made to include Harley Quinn, one of the most easily recognizable villains in the DC canon, and Joker’s Daughter, one of the most troubled characters. Either way, it should be entertaining.

Why Is This Movie So Exciting?

First of all, this a movie about villains and according to the director, it’s going to stay that way. In the past, movies based on supervillains tend to get changed (see Wanted). One of the reasons why this might happen is because some people think that the viewer can’t relate to a villain, but I say who cares? Villains should be badass and entertaining; I don’t feel the need to relate to them.

Warner Bros. is taking a bold step by keeping the title “Suicide Squad,” which surely some people will find offensive. However, it makes it seem like they’re trying to appeal to the comic book fans, not trying to keep the movie politically correct. I also have high hopes for this movie because Ayer is showing his respect to the fans when he says,

“I love the passion [comic-book fans] have for these characters and these worlds. I think there’s something incredible about the comic genre and technology has finally caught up with pen and ink to render these fantastic worlds in a way that feels believable and visceral to audiences. It’s a secular religion in that regards. The mythology that these characters represent – the idea of them as fallen gods on Earth – is intriguing to me. I can’t wait to start exploring those corridors.”

I can’t wait for when “Suicide Squad” hits theaters on August 5, 2016.
