There aren’t enough western games out there. Red Dead Redemption and Call of Juarez are about the only two big titles these days, and they fall into a traditional western style world. Hard West is currently closing in on its Kickstarter goal, with 16 days to go, and it deserves a look. Essentially a paranormal western that plays similar to XCOM, the title is aiming to do something unique.
I checked out the Kickstarter video a few nights ago and I have to say, above all else, the fact that shadows play such a huge part in the strategy of the game makes this feel more like a western than anything else I have seen in the gaming world.
I don’t care if you like westerns or not. The wild west is a sorely untapped time period for game developers to explore. I’ve had enough World War X games, or dystopian futures for this life time. Give me some horses, guns, spittoons and throw in a little paranormal stuff for flavor, and you have my attention.
