Review: Majestic Nights Chapter 1 and 2

It’s the 1980s again and the fears of the past have come creeping back into people’s minds. Spooks, conspiracy, extraterrestrials, Nazis and secret human experimenting. The core idea of this game, the graphics, music, and limited options definitely are a throwback to the good old days but why does it have to behave like it as well?

I for one, enjoy the idea of the game; it’s like Splinter Cell but with less technology; the Playable Character (PC) has to be stealthy at pretty much all times – using the shadows to their advantage, plus you get the chance to choose what the PC says, and the synopsis are great. However, the actual playing of the game really was a struggle.

Like normal, the controls are WASD which you get used to after awhile. The things that irked me was the lack of attention to detail that this game was missing. Things like turning the music track down or off completely. I personally don’t like listening to game music while I play, I find it distracting rather than adding to the “atmosphere”. There were no actual tutorials on how to use weapons.

In Chapter One, it’s not really needed; you’re just using a gun.. but in chapter two, the PC has about four options of weapons an nowhere does it explain how to access them. For most of the beginning of chapter two, I was running around with a dagger even though I could clearly see a katana on her back!

Overall, there were bugs:

1. You could open doors from the other side of the wall (if you were close enough) and that included searching through the searchable objects through the walls.

2. The NPCs could shoot at you through obstacles yet you couldn’t shoot at them.

3. The vision of the PC was seriously limited and yet the NPCs could see you from a mile away.

These bugs and the lack of option to turn off the music really frustrated me in trying to play this game. I also found it odd that on steam, it clearly states that people could buy the Season Pass and access all chapters but when I went to the DLC page of Steam, it was nowhere to be found.

I understand that this game is still a work in progress (what game isn’t, to be honest?) but I wouldn’t recommend playing it until they iron out these kinks, or until the other five chapters are available to play.

Majestic Nights is $6.00 on Steam.
