Review: This War of Mine

Not too long ago, I wrote about a game that was coming out on Steam called This War of Mine. It took two days to play ten in-game. It’s dark, gray, and foreboding. Everything; including life is gone in this war torn land. Everything that once had life and color is now replaced by black and white, debris, struggles of survival, and killing or dying. Yes, there are chances to trade but in the end, civility ended when the mortar shells started raining down upon the country.

The most difficult thing I found (game wise) was locating enough food and water. Everything else was in abundance (materials, wood, gears, electrical parts). This made survival so difficult, and very interesting.

The bad parts about this game wasn’t the story/plot, characters, or even the location of the game. This game lacked a tutorial on commands or even an option to look at the commands. Yes, it sounds easy, point and click with the mouse however, the clicking was on icons and those icons were never explained. They don’t tell you that double clicking on something or somewhere would make the character(s) go faster. Two characters couldn’t go on a scavenge together either; it was only one yet two people could guard the place they lived.

They also never explain the concept of when you go out to scavenge; like what to bring with you and not only that but the slots are extremely limited! They also don’t give you the option to upgrade the backpacks so you can carry more things yet you could upgrade everything within the place you lived. They also don’t explain combat or even that you could combat people when out on the scavenging.

During my playthrough, I also suffered with framerate issues. It may have been my PC, but at times it really chugged.

Other than those points, the game itself was interesting to play and yes, I recommend the game if you have a really good PC and you like playing this genre of game! It’s definitely an acquired taste of genre.
