Peter Jackson may direct Doctor Who episode after finishing The Hobbit

It’s no secret that Peter Jackson is a tremendous Doctor Who fan. He’s previously mentioned an interest in directing an episode, but until now that has only been foreplay due to his hectic schedule. One can only imagine why this man hasn’t dropped dead already from directing all of these epic films.

But, with the arrival of the last portion of The Hobbit almost upon us, it looks as though that timetable may very well open up.   Unless he plans on filming the Simarillion

According to Doctor Who producer Steven Moffat, the director’s interest is legit.

I’ve spoken to him face to face, and he would like to do one.

“I’ve spoken to him face to face, and he would like to do one,” says Moffat. “He accepts that there’s no money and that there’s no time, and it would have to be when he’s available – and I don’t think he’s even been available enough to answer our emails of late!”

“I think it will probably happen at some point. I mean, he can do what the hell he likes – he owns New Zealand! I think he’s sincere in his Doctor Whofandom, to say the least.”

“He’s a nice guy, he quite often drops me a line after a show goes out. It’s just, ‘Can you make it work?’ I think he would also like us to go and make it in New Zealand, and I’m like, ‘Okaaay… I’d rather we just flew you to Cardiff!’”

There aren’t too many Doctor Who fans who would pass up the opportunity to direct an episode, no matter who you are, so I’m fairly optimistic. I think it’s even possible we could see Peter Jackson directing the Christmas special. What do you think?
