Review: Tromeo & Juliet

Tromeo & Juliet was originally released on February 28, 1997 by Troma Entertainment.

Plot

Tromeo & Juliet is a modern retelling of the classic Shakespearean yarn, in which the narrator (Lemmy from Motorhead) introduces the Que’s and Capulet’s in an hilarious montage. Tromeo works at a tattoo parlor with his cousin Benny and friend Murray. Juliet lives in the mansion her father Cappy Capulet owns and is kept almost as a prisoner by her abusive father that locks her in the “time out” room if she shouts or misbehaves. Her lover is her family servant that she sleeps with for sexual stimulation, and Tromeo’s girlfriend is cheating on him much to his ignorance. The families have quarreled with each other for a long time, but I won’t ruin the reason why they bickered because it would be a major spoiler for the movie. The families quarreling escalates into a brawl between members of both families and starts a chain of events that carry the film into an ending that is both memorable and grotesque in equal measures.

Review

The Blu-ray boasts different aspect-ratios, including a widescreen ratio, that gives the viewer a cinema feel with a widescreen television. The grotesque scenes and sexual scenes are highlighted in this edition and focuses heavily on slapstick gore and sensual sex scenes. The edition doesn’t shy away from the intense comical parts with the ultra-gore and in-your-face sexploitation Troma has become famous for. The special features are abundant with special mentions to the deleted scenes presented by co-founder of Troma, Lloyd Kaufman himself, and the commentary with cast and crew made to accompany the film is interesting to view. Fans of special features that accompany the regular film will not be disappointed with this.

The ultra-gore is often sickening and the comedy is dark to say the least, but has a significant charm to it that only Troma can pull off. Without hesitation, I would recommend you watch it for yourselves, but make sure anyone under 18 years of age do not watch the film. Lloyd Kaufman makes a brief cameo as well as some memorable cameos and Easter eggs from other Troma titles from the past. If you love Easter eggs and cameos you, will love this! A great moment of mine was when you see Toxie from The Toxic Avenger and Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D. in a few scenes, and I also found movie posters and videos littered about the place.
