Dark Matter: Episode 8 Review & Recap

If the latest episode of Dark Matter left you a little befuddled, you’re not the only one. Despite obviously being a setup episode, “Episode 8” did have some comedic zingers, like the Star Wars 36 joke. Could you imagine? Six finally confronted the General, we found out One really isn’t Jace Corso, and not surprisingly, there are trust issues among the crew on “Episode 8” of Dark Matter. Spoiler alert.

Six

Six settles a score…sort of. This week on Dark Matter, the storyline picked up where we last left off with Six. The big guy, as the trope goes, wasted no time ditching the rest of the crew so that he could take care of some personal business when they docked at the space station. Since learning the truth about his past, Six (aka Griffin Jones) has been on a mission to seek out the General for a long overdue confrontation. Thanks to the state-of-the-art travel tech called Transfer Transit, he was able to do so. Remember, the General is the guy who sent Six and other members of the anti-corporate terrorist group Procyon Insurrection on a mission to bomb Station Hyadum 12. The mission resulted in the deaths of some 10,000 innocent civilians, which apparently Six had no prior knowledge of beforehand. Not that anyone cares; he’s still wanted for the crime.

After recently learning about the mass casualties at Station Hyadum 12, Six then decided to embark on a secret mission to confront the man responsible for ordering the mission in the first place. Who could blame him? And what a sweet victory it was for Six to finally take out the General. Too bad it lasted for less than a minute. Turns out, the General that Six killed was a clone. Yup! Didn’t see that one coming and I bet you didn’t either. All this happened before One and Four were able to catch up with Six, which was probably a good thing because they would’ve likely sabotaged his plans if they did.

TheAndroid

No more secrets and lies. If only that statement were true. Ever since they all woke up from stasis, nearly every member of the Raza crew has been keeping some sort of secret, lying or both. One may not be so secretive about his feelings for Two, which nearly cost him an arm this week—note to One, never sneak up on Two ever again—but he was keeping the secret about running into the other Jace Corso. More on that in the cliffhanger, but let’s just say that he was finally forced to tell the rest of the crew about his run-in with his look-alike. Two is hiding the fact that she is completely healed from her space zombie attack, which has serious implications about them all. Three was hiding the fact that he really knew about One and his look-alike. Four is hiding the fact that he’s in communication with his half brother and Five is hiding the fact that she knows how she got on the Raza. We already know what secret Six is keeping. The only one not keeping any secrets or lying is the Android, who thanks to superior re-generative tech was back in action by the end of the episode. And no, I don’t count the fact that she didn’t know she was experiencing feelings as a lie.

TheRealOne

The cliffhanger. This week, the cliffhanger revolved around our favorite criminal with a conscience, One. After finally being forced to tell the rest of the Raza crew that he really isn’t Jace Corso, One decided to do a little research of his own to find out more about who he really is. And to be expected, yet another layer of the story was revealed. As it turns out, One’s real name is Derrick Moss and he’s apparently some newly appointed big shot CEO for a company called CoreLactic Industries, and oh yeah a bazillionaire, too. One (or Derrick Moss) is also recently widowed, apparently thanks to his fellow crew member, Three. Did Three really have something to do with One’s wife’s death? If he did, was it on purpose or even justified, knowing what we know about the corporations in the Dark Matter universe? And what’s more, how will this revelation affect the group dynamic going forward since they’re trying the whole no-secrets-and-lies thing? This should be good.

Dark Matter airs Fridays at 10:00pm EST on Syfy.
