As if us superhero enthused nerds needed yet another reason to watch more TV, the CW is apparently developing a superhero team-up hour featuring some of our favorites from The Flash and Arrow. Originally hinted at back in January during the Television Critics Association by CW President Mark Pedowitz, this addition to DC TV is likely to premiere sometime next year, possibly mid-season.
According to Deadline, which first broke the headline story, the untitled project is currently in development and will include Brandon Routh, who plays Ray Palmer/The Atom on Arrow. Wentworth Miller, who plays Captain Cold and Victor Garber, who plays Dr. Martin Stein, will continue their roles from The Flash. Also rumored to appear in the superhero team-up hour is Caity Lotz, who as we all remember played the first Black Canary on Arrow. Additional superheroes are expected to join the team, although their names have yet to be announced. We do, however, know that Berlanti, Kriesberg and Guggenheim have signed up to produce the show.
The Kings of DC TV
Reigning Kings of DC TV Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kriesberg, and Marc Guggenheim are spearheading this project. The executive producers and creators who brought both Arrow and the current Flash television series’ to CW are no strangers to the genre and will likely contribute to the success of this new superhero team-up hour as they have done in the past. Even with the Berlanti, Kriesberg and Guggenheim on board, the show is currently generating lots of speculation.
Let the Questioning Begin
Now that we know this superhero team-up is happening, aside from the excitement, I for one have so many questions and I suspect you do as well. First, in what capacity do the writers intend to use Caity Lotz, since her version of Black Canary was killed off in season 3 of Arrow? Specifically, how will the writers explain her being the Black Canary and co-existing simultaneously as her sister, who is currently the Black Canary?
Also of great concern, since The Atom is leaving Arrow to be on the superhero team-up hour, what does that mean for his presence in Starling City? Will he make guest appearances on Arrow? Will we ever get to see The Atom and Arrow work together? The same goes for some of the characters on The Flash. Specifically, if Dr. Martin Stein leaves to be on the superhero team-up hour, then what will to happen to Firestorm; remember Dr. Stein is only one half of the duo that makes up the troubled superhero. Even more, if Wentworth Miller takes Captain Cold to the superhero team-up hour does that mean that The Flash will never face the entire Rogues Gallery at one time?
But then again, maybe none of these characters may be permanently leaving their former shows; with the exception of Caity Lotz’s Black Canary who was already killed off of Arrow. If that is indeed the case, then we may in fact see these characters bounce from show to show, really creating a unified universe. I suspect we shall have all our answers to these questions and many more in due time. Stay tuned. I know I will.
