It’s back! Well, almost. On February 27, Netflix is set to debut the much anticipated third season of its critically acclaimed political drama House of Cards, and from the looks of the teaser trailer that recently dropped, the gauntlet is finally going to come down on the Underwoods. Something that’s been a long time coming for the maniacal couple hell bent on world domination. But before we get to season 3, let’s first recap where the show left off, just in case you forgot.
The Long Road to the Top
When we first met Congressman Frank Underwood, he was quite perturbed when the President passed him over for the Secretary of State position. You didn’t have to be perceptive to quickly pick up on the fact that he wasn’t satisfied being majority whip of the House of Representatives and thus a plan of tactical vengeance began to ensue. Little did we know the great lengths to which both Frank and his wife Claire would eventually go through in an effort to oust the President and assume control of the White House for themselves.
Over the course of two seasons, we have witnessed the Underwoods’ divisive path to the oval office, the likes of which included everything from blackmail, political sabotage and murder. In other words, they’re the perfect couple; extramarital affairs and all. As we saw in season 2, even a mistress or a lover couldn’t deter Frank and Claire from their plans. Talk about commitment to the cause!
All their work culminated in a victory by the end of season 2, after Frank had succeeded in manipulating the President to resign as part of a grand, and might I say masterfully executed, game plan which landed him in the oval office. Checkmate! The only problem is, with so many enemies on both sides of the aisle on his way to the top, it will only be a matter of time before it all begins to fall apart.
The Best and Worst of Times
Leave it to House of Cards to deliver one of most thrilling teaser trailers, and it only lasts for less than a minute. In the teaser for the new season, we see Frank as acting president, which leads to drama on both the home front and abroad. It’s no wonder he appears to be making enemies, what politician and dignitary could he possibly endear with his manipulative and threatening tactics? I guess we’ll all see, soon enough.
Until then, one of the most telling parts of the trailer is in the last few seconds when Claire and Frank are alone in a room together and she confesses “we’re murderers, Frank!” He immediately corrects her, “we’re survivors!” Well, we’ll all be the judge of that…
House of Cards returns to Netflix on February 27.
