Shellshock Live review

What was once a flash game will remain a flash game, but Kchamp Games decided to upgrade it and make it a Steam game. With more weapons, maps, tanks, modes and a single player campaign, Shellshock Live has a lot to offer for a very affordable price.  It is currently in early access and getting free updates every month.  The game is a lot like the 2001 game Pocket Tanks but with more weapons, maps, gamemodes and smoother gameplay that offers more fun whether you play for 5 minutes or 5 hours. Shellshock Live is also like worms since it uses the same concept of having to kill the other players with various weapons and items. However it contains more unique weapons and does a better job at making each seem more deadly then what worms do.

Tank Warfare

Shellshock Live features 7 multiplayer modes such as Juggernaut where everyone shoots at the Juggernaut to the well known team deathmatch. Each gamemode can have 2-8 players and all you do is shoot everyone to gain XP. Sure that sounds like it would get boring very fast, but every time you level up you get a new weapon.

Redesigned terrain graphics give the familiar look a more refined feel and make the already-stunning environments pop. New parallax-style backgrounds add a layer of dimension to the familiar 2D landscapes. You can even change the colour of the background as long as you the colour unlocked and have look the way you want it to for any map that you have also unlocked and to make it look better, everything seems to have a little glow to it. It really does make it stand out that little bit more.

It’s a bit simple. Unlock, upgrade and master over 200 weapons. From the intimidating seagull, to the not-so-scary spider, or test your luck with clover and with each update a new weapon gets released. You can even fight Kchamp, if you are lucky enough to fight him.

Showdown

The controls for this game are straightforward and easy to learn. You move your tank left and right and then you move your turret left and right and increase how much power to put into your attack before you fire your weapon. However, a lot of the weapons are weak in power and you have a leveling system not only for your tank, but also for the weapons that will change what the weapon does and more power to the weapon.

The multiplayer aspect of the game comes built in with a server browser, private lobby creator and gamemode modifiers fir for creating the perfect kind of carnage for you. Fancy a gametype with extreme wind? Do it. Fancy a gamemode where damage only counts by a rebound? Do it. Fancy a gametype where you can only use one weapon? Do it.

Shell or be shelled

No game is without it flaws though. One thing I noticed immediately after joining my first multiplayer match is that there is a severe level balancing issue. If you are level 1 and go up against a level 80 player, you’ll be annihilated simply due to the level 80 have access to more overpowered weapons that can hit you for substantially more damage then what you can do at level 1. Another thing to note is the inclusion on the skill tree means that you need to focus on essential stats, such as damage or health since you start of with basic stats that are easily trumped by anything else any leveled player will have.

Despite this, you’ll still find fun within Shellshock Live and yes, you will get annihilated repeatedly, but as long as you join games close to or around your level you’ll be grand. (Especially if you play with a group of friends and go into free for all matches.) A final thing to mention is to complete the campaign as soon as you can since it will help level up faster and unlock a new weapon after each chapter is completed.

Do you like to fling KFC at people?
Do you like to throw cats or kittens at people?
Do you like to throw flowers at people?
Do you like to rain fire down on people?
Do you like to rain water or a whole river on people?
Do you like to throw pinatas at people?
Do you like to throw snakes at people?
Do you like to throw cacti at people?
Do you want to do all that to your friends and then also level up and still get rewarded for just playing with them?

Then this game is for you. Fun with friends. Fun with people. It’s really is a great game to have fun with.
