Shane is coming to Daredevil. Well, sort of. Actor Jon Bernthal, most recently known for slaying his performance of the character Shane on The Walking Dead, was recently cast as Frank Castle/The Punisher in the upcoming season of Daredevil.
According to Access Hollywood, Marvel made the amazing casting announcement this week that Bernthal will be joining the cast of Daredevil, further building anticipation for the second season of the bona fide hit on Netflix. Just in case you thought you were the only one excited about this casting news, take a seat, Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb, is way ahead of you. Here’s what he had to say:
Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences. Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.
Honestly, could Loeb have given Bernthal a better compliment? Probably not, but it’s certainly well deserved. The Walking Dead alum racked up quite a fan base during his run on the horror drama TV show for his outstanding performance of Shane Walsh. When news hit the Internet about Bernthal’s casting as The Punisher, thousands of fans took to Twitter to congratulate the Fury actor, to which he responded with absolute gratitude. No, thank you, Jon!
The Punisher versus Daredevil
For those who aren’t aware, The Punisher and Daredevil have had a long, extremely violent and antagonistic relationship thanks largely to Frank Miller’s run as head writer for Daredevil comics. Since his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #129, the blood thirsty vigilante known as The Punisher has had no problems killing criminals. Given his judge, jury and executioner version of justice it’s no wonder he and Daredevil don’t exactly get along.
Daredevil, as we all know, is more known for beating up criminals to a bloody pulp, leaving them just shy of death so that they could face justice for their crimes. And, as we saw on the first season of Daredevil on Netflix, his particular brand of vigilantism made for intense viewing. As violent as the first season of Daredevil was, just imagine how rough things will get with The Punisher in the mix. One thing’s for sure, this won’t be anything like your typical CW superhero team-up and something tells me Marvel and Netflix wouldn’t have it any other way.
Season 2 of Daredevil hits Netflix in 2016. In the meantime, you can still binge on all 13 episodes of the first season while you wait for it to drop.
