Who says the Super Bowl can’t be nerdy? At least this year’s commercials were anyway. From the memorable to the sublime, the commercials that stuck out the most just so happened to be nerdy as well. Here’s a quick rundown of the nerdiest 2015 Super Bowl Commercials, in case you missed it.
1. Terminator- Genysis
When Arnold said he would be back, years ago, he really meant it! Thanks to a Super Bowl commercial spotlight, Terminator fans/nerds got a sneak peak at the new trailer for the upcoming franchise film. I don’t know what was scarier, Arnold’s white hair or the seemingly confusing plot. Stay tuned folks, this one should get interesting!
2. Jurassic World
Though technically the trailer for Jurassic World was leaked back in November 2014, it was still nice to see it in the mix of other Super Bowl commercials. Ever since Guardians of the Galaxy, Chris Pratt can do no wrong and Jurassic World looks like yet another hit for the budding action star. Now, all he needs to do is land the next Indiana Jones!
3. Kia: The Perfect Getaway
James Bond fans had their moment as well. In a surprisingly funny Kia car commercial, Pierce Brosnan, former James Bond, is called into an office to discuss an upcoming project. He thinks it’s another James Bond film complete with the typical explosions and fast cars, but as it turns out, it’s just a regular Kia Sorrento car commercial. There are, however, fireworks in the end.
4. Fast and Furious: Furious 7
The next installment of the Fast and Furious franchise is almost upon us and thanks to the Super Bowl we finally got to see a trailer of the new movie. What can you expect from the Furious 7? The same family with more stunts and explosions. It also doesn’t hurt to add action star Jason Statham into the mix.
5. Pitch Perfect 2
The Barden Bellas and Treblemakers are back! Fans of the first a cappella hit likely sang with joy when they saw the new trailer for the sequel to the movie Pitch Perfect. We all know Pitch Perfect 2 hits theaters in May, but it definitely was nice to see the a cappella nerds in action; even if it was for only a minute and a half Super Bowl commercial.
6. Bud Light Coin- The Pac Man Super Bowl Spotlight
Gaming nerds, who also might happen to enjoy a Bud Light, may have geeked out over the Bud Light Coin- Pac Man Super Bowl spotlight commercial. The cool thing about this commercial was watching an unsuspecting Bud Light drinker play a life size version of the old school game Pac Man. It was the perfect mix of nostalgia and awesomeness. Bud Light won major kudos for that one.
7. Heroes Reborn
Heroes is coming back to NBC. Now, we all knew that the groundbreaking TV show was ahead of its time several years back during its original run, but a lot has changed since then. There are a lot more superhero inspired television shows now and more coming down the pipeline; which should help the show’s performance. The preview didn’t last that long, but it did give us something to look forward to. As we anticipate the premiere episode, we can only hope that the writers found a way not to sabotage the show like they did the last time.
8. 50 Shades of Grey
50 Shades of Grey book nerds have been patiently waiting for the trailer and the Super Bowl delivered. Come February 14th, fans of the best-selling novel will undoubtedly be lined up to see this highly publicized romantic thriller and with all the preceding build-up. Hopefully, fans aren’t disappointed.
9. Carnival Cruise: Come Back To the Sea
If you’re an American History buff, then the Carnival Cruise Super Bowl commercial was probably one of your favorites. In case you didn’t see it, you might be wondering what history might have to do with Carnival cruise line. This is the interesting part. Carnival Cruise brought President John F. Kennedy back to life, via a voice recording, to give a speech about how the ocean is one with us as human beings. Get it? Come back to the sea. Yes, they went there and it was surprisingly awesome.
10. Mercedes: Fable- The Tortoise and the Hare
If you’re a fan of the classic Aesop fable “The Tortoise and the Hare,” and who isn’t, then you probably geeked out over the Mercedes Super Bowl commercial featuring computer generated updated versions of the legendary characters. The commercial starts with the usual race between the Tortoise and the Hare. Only this time, with an unexpected plot twist, the Tortoise spots a Mercedes manufacturing plant. The next thing we know, the Tortoise is speeding out onto the road, finally beating out the Hare…perhaps once and for all!
