Typecasted, Try Something New

Lets face it, we love movies. We may not know the directors and producers by heart but the leading actors; yeah we definitely can say, “Oh yeah! Did you see him/her in (insert movie title here)? They were awesome!” However, for those A-list actors who are well known in these films to make them hits can sometimes become a typecast and I feel that if you’re an artist, you should expand your horizons and here are six actors I’d love to see be villains.

6. John Cho – You may not recognize the name but his face, you definitely will. John’s big break (in my opinion) was when he played Harold in Harold & Kumar. They even make a stab at the stereotype of him being oriental and perhaps only liking oriental girls. He’s recently slipped into some bigger shoes taking over the role of Sulu in Star Trek. On IMDB there was a quick list of Korean actors who are well known in Hollywood and he’s one of them. Unlike some of the male actors on that list, I don’t ever recall seeing John play anything but the good guy. Ever.

5. Zac Efron – No, Bad Neighbors does not count. This guy has played a good guy in High School Musical and even the soldier coming home with PTSD in The Lucky One however, I’ve never seen him be a bad guy and with his signature smirk, I definitely think he could pull it off.

Start Top Left: John Cho, Zooey Dachanel, Zac Efron Bottom Left: Adam Sandler, Kristen Wiig, Jake Gyllenhaal

4. Kristen Wiig – Don’t know the name? Look up Bridesmaid. She was the lead in that. She’s also known for being in Saturday Night Live, MacGruber, Despicable Me, and even How to Train Your Dragon 2. I personally have not seen her as a true villain and it’s a role I’d love for  her to suit up in.

3. Jake Gyllenhaal – Jake has always played either an anti hero, a funny guy, or a messed up hero. He’s always seen as a character people can relate to – you bleed, he bleeds, we all bleed. However, if he played a character with the mentality of Bullseye or that weird character in Sin City (played by Elijah Wood) I think he’d nail it.

2. Zooey Dachanel – Bam! Wasn’t expecting her name right? Like many other female actresses, she tends to play an awkward female character who is silly and funny but pretty. She never plays a confident and narcissistic female lead which I think she should try; it’s nice to try a different dress on every now and then. Own it, girl.

1. Adam Sandler – Surprise us dude. Harrison Ford did in What Lies Beneath, Mel Gibson in Expendables 3, Patrick Stewart in Conspiracy Theory, Patrick Swayze in Donnie Darko, well, you get the point. I think it’d be awesome to see Sandler being a down and gritty bad guy – the shadow pulling the strings and taking the good guys into twists and turns that he masterminded!
