The Game Awards 2014 Premieres Dec. 5th

Spike TV’s VGX (previously known as the Video Game Awards or VGA) has held a reputation as more of a televised video game convention than an awards show. However, the former host of the awards show, Geoff Keighley, has announced The Game Awards 2014 to replace VGX as Spike TV has reportedly cancelled it’s continuous presentation.

As the now producer of TGA2014, Keighley states on the show’s website, “Today I’m proud to announce The Game Awards 2014, a new show that will be coming in just one month’s time. After spending over two decades working in games media, this year I’m creating a new independent celebration for our industry.”

Having a huge event like this televised was certainly helpful in bringing video games to a more mainstream spotlight when VGX was founded in 2013. It’s sad to see it go but inspiring to see the passionate members involved pushing on to assist in mounting video games firmly in mainstream culture.

Among the advisory board are big names such as Shawn Layden, CEO of SCEA, Phil Spencer, head of XBox Microsoft, and Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO of Nintendo America. Not to mention, the likes of Hideo Kojima, Valve, and Rockstar Games.

The event takes place in Las Vegas, NV at the AXIS Theater on December 5th. Tickets can be purchased on Ticketmaster but for those who won’t be able to make it, the event will be streaming on Steam, PSN, and XBox Live. No word yet on whether Twitch.tv is streaming the event or not. But to stay updated you can join the e-mail list or follow it on Twitter or Facebook.
