Atlus released a new trailer for its upcoming Persona 5. The trailer does not show much about the game beyond the setting, and what the presumed protagonist looks like, but it does reveal that the game will be releasing for both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 next year. Check out the video here.
I first found the Persona series through Persona 4 Golden on the PlayStation Vita and it’s been near the top of the list of my favorite games ever since. With its easy to grasp but still difficult combat, colorful and entertaining characters, and gripping storylines any JRPG fan should check out the series.
If you haven’t had a chance to play a Persona game before, they can be summed up as classic JRPG meets dating sim meets Pokémon. You play as a group of Japanese high schoolers who wind up in the middle of some sort of mystery.
Using the “power of Persona” you battle by summoning the help of Japanese gods. You can get access to new summons through combat or by fusing the ones you currently have. In your spare time live the life of an average student, going to class, attending clubs, studying hanging out with friends, and dating. The strength of your relationships outside of school enhance your ability to fuse new Personas, making hanging out with friends an integral part of the game.
Persona 5’s looks to be darker than Persona 4, which is arguably the most cheerful game about a serial killer released. The game’s director, Katsura Hashino has described the game focuses on “themes of restraint and liberation, in modern society.”
He continues, “I feel that in today’s world, there’s no shortage of people that are bored and discontent with their lives. They’re at a dead end, chained down to a world of which they resent being a part. ‘Persona 5, in that sense, is a game about freedom, the kind that those sorts of people haven’t had living in the real world.”
Get excited for this entry in the series. Be on the lookout for its release in 2015.
