Grimm: The Grimm Identity Recap & Review

Bravo! True to the Grimm format of storytelling, the season five premiere was just as convoluted as any other episode from previous seasons, perhaps maybe more, and it was all kinds of awesome. Nick tries to find Trubel, Adalind has his baby, and more on the season five premiere of Grimm: “The Grimm Identity.” Spoiler alert.

No Sign of Trubel

NickholdsdeadJuliette

Normally, that phrase would sound good, right? But in this case it’s not good news. Strange as it sounds, we like Trubel. In the season four finale of Grimm, we all watched—with our mouths on the floor—as Trubel shot and killed Juliette with a crossbow. We think. And though Nick was relieved Juliette was subdued (permanently) in her attack, it was also a huge blow to his heart, since he still loved his longtime girlfriend turned psycho—and loving it, mind you—hexenbeist. The season five premiere of Grimm opened with the continuation of that storyline, and apparently things only got worse for our wesen-fighting protagonist.

It turns out, within minutes of Trubel taking out Juliette—like a boss—Nick had absolutely no time to mourn his loss, as both he and Trubel found themselves being attacked by some masked men that invaded his home. Nick was drugged, and we saw the men struggle as they attempted to take Trubel. Oh, and the masked men also took Nick’s mother’s head. Remember, last season the Royals, with the help of Juliette, cornered Nick’s mother Kelly in Nick’s house and decapitated her, leaving her head in a shipping box for poor Nick to find. When Nick woke up, everyone was gone and his home was seemingly untouched; except for the fact that it really wasn’t. The people behind Trubel’s disappearance just really knew what they were doing, obviously. Once Nick came to, he started to remember Trubel mentioning a connection to an FBI Agent by the name of Chavez, who is also a wesen, and his justifiable revenge/vigilante rampage was officially underway.

The Chavez Connection

Grimm - Season 5

After briefing his partner Hank about Juliette’s death, Trubel’s disappearance, and the alleged connection to it all, Nick quickly realized that he was on his own. Although, in Hank’s initial defense, Nick was coming off a little too much like someone with post-traumatic stress disorder, or something like it. Understandably so, he had just suffered two great losses back-to-back. But still.

So, the first thing Nick does is go straight to the source for some answers, of course. And because he had absolutely no shame in his game, he went right to Chavez’s office at the FBI and proceeded to lay out the facts, as he believed, to the alleged culprit behind it all. When that strategy to get Trubel’s location failed, epically, Nick resorted to plan B, which was show up at Chavez’s house and abduct her. Makes sense, right? At the same time, Monroe and Rosalee, and later Sgt. Woo, were briefed separately about everything. Once everyone realized that Nick was probably going to head over to Chavez’s house, Monroe agreed to go talk some sense into his friend, to no avail. Nick ordered Monroe away almost as fast as he got to Chavez’s house, only ensuring that there were no further hiccups in his plan to take Chavez.

Little did the rest of the gang know, however, that part of Nick’s plan was to bring Chavez back to the spice shop, where everyone was convened, for an interrogation of sorts. Shortly after, Nick was called away because Adalind was in labor, he had no choice to but to trust that Hank, Monroe, and Sgt. Woo could get Trubel’s location out of her. That didn’t happen, but they were able to obtain Chavez’s trust enough so that she organized a meeting for Nick to meet the people who were responsible for/knew the exact location where Trubel was. That also was an epic fail as things turned violent upon their arrival. Both Nick and Chavez were attacked by four wesen who ended up fatally wounding Chavez. And while she did manage to give Nick a parting gift, perhaps a key to the facility that Chavez visited before going home earlier, her cryptic send-off only solidified that Nick is up against some serious badasses who mean business, and finding Trubel is going to be a bit more complicated.

Meet Kelly

Adalindinlabor

Speaking of badasses, Adalind and Nick’s baby boy is bound to be one of them, when he gets older. Think about it, his mother was a hexenbeist (when he was conceived) and his dad is a Grimm, can we say watch out world? Or, at the very least watch out Portland. We shall see.

After handling the situation with Chavez, Nick headed back to St. Joe’s hospital, where his baby mama Adalind had already given birth to their son. And though you could cut the tension in the room with a knife, Nick clearly wanted to be there for his new son and Adalind, as much as he could. Adalind noticed the effort and responded in kind by offering to name their son Kelly, after Nick’s recently deceased mother. Aww, they just may make a happy family after all. Ha! Only time will tell. There’s a lot to look forward to in this new season of Grimm and so far things are off to a pretty good start.

Grimm airs Fridays at 9:00pm EST on NBC.
