Marvel’s Agent Carter’s second episode quickly picks up where the first one left off. Peggy arrives at Howard Stark’s place to witness Jarvis is in the middle of a physical fitness regime that he started after the shenanigans from last season. Funny moments ensue where Peggy quickly takes Jarvis down only to have him surprise her with a take down. In walks his wife who pays no attention to the awkward position Peggy and Jarvis find themselves in.
Hidden Powers that Be
Back at SSR headquarters Chief Sousa is worried about telling Peggy about his girlfriend whom she witnessed him kissing in the first episode only to walk into to work and see them chatting up a storm. Sousa and Peggy finally get a search warrant to inspect Isodyne only to find that behind the scenes it is being quarantined and they are not allowed to enter. A quick run in with Dr. Wilkes doesn’t help them at the moment but a quick slight of hand and a message is passed along to Agent Carter.
We see an assassin of some sort doing his job before we follow along with Mr. Chadwick arriving at some secret council that has some power on a national level. They cancel Isodyne’s zero matter project despite Chadwick’s objections but they convince him to let it go and focus on his senate election. This group of powerful men is going to have a larger role to play as we hear them mention that they were responsible for the stock market crash of 1929 where apparently they profited heavily as a result.
Revelations
The note Peggy received from Dr. Wilkes ask to her to come meet him alone which Sousa advises against but she goes anyways. In what is suppose to be a private meeting to gather information ends up seeming more like a date at a jazz club where Peggy ends up revealing a bit about herself to the Wilkes in his attempts to get closer to her. A quick dance and he finally agrees to go show her what Jane Scott was killed over when they pick up a tail. We cut to Mr. Chadwick and Whitney Frost talking about the cancellation of the zero matter project and while Mr. Chadwick doesn’t like it, he seems okay with accepting his orders. Whitney Frost however doesn’t seem as willing to let it go and advises Chadwick to pick his mistresses more carefully in the future.
Wilkes and Peggy bond a bit at the observatory where he reveals more about himself and wehre he came from and how Isodyne was the only company to hire him after getting out of the Navy. Wilkes shows Peggy a video where zero matter was discovered during the atom bomb testing and how it suck everything into it without leaving a trace. Trouble is brewing though as Stark’s car that Peggy borrowed from Jarvis earlier has its tires slashed by some armed men who rush towards the observatory. Fortunately for them it is a Stark car and it has some extra features that allow them to alert Jarvis who goes on to alert Chief Sousa unfortunately interrupting his date. A high speed chase ensues after Peggy hot wires one of their tail’s car until they are able to get away making their way back to Isodyne. In the car Peggy finds another clue though as she finds the same pin that Dottie Underwood had on her when she was arrested by the SSR in episode one.
Trouble at Isodyne
Jarvis and Chief Sousa team up in their search for Peggy and Wilkes by heading to Isodyne where unknown to them Carter and Wilkes are already there trying to steal the zero matter. Peggy goes into action mode kicking arse and not bothering to take names while Dr. Wilkes uses the distraction to gather the zero matter. Things quickly take a turn for the worse when he is confronted by Whitney Frost and things go very bad as they fight over the container holding the zero matter before it falls and shatters activating it and leaving destruction in it’s wake. Peggy’s bad luck with men continues as there is no sign of Dr. Wilkes after the zero matter accident, but at the very end of the episode we see that Whitney Frost has somehow survived absorbing at least a part of the matter.
A View in the Dark ask a lot more questions than it answers and the transition for Agent Carter to Los Angeles isn’t going nearly as smoothly as she hoped. One possible love interest looks to be getting engaged and another is taken by the dark matter. The dark matter adds an interesting dimension to the series adding a science fiction twist which may be Marvel’s way of leading in to Doctor Strange later this year with talks of different dimensions. A good episode and a solid opening night for Agent Carter in what looks to be a very intriguing series.
