The latest episode of Dark Matter played out like a lost episode of The Walking Dead and it was surprisingly entertaining, despite being kind of derivative. The Raza crew comes into contact with some space zombies, One and Three reach a new understanding, and more on “Episode 5” of Dark Matter. Spoiler alert!
One Versus Three
Last week on Dark Matter, One and Three found themselves face-to-face with a man who looked just like the Jace Corso we know as One (the sensitive pretty boy). That run-in didn’t work out so well for the both of them, but it also led to Three (the jerkass) blackmailing One, which carried over into this week’s episode. It didn’t last for long, though, because One stood up to Three when it became apparent that they were both in some sort of love triangle with Two (the boss lady).
It all started when One paid an impromptu visit to Three’s personal quarters and nearly bumped into Two on her way out. Clearly the implication was that they hooked up, which Three did his best to help perpetuate when he popped up shirtless with a slick grin on his face. Why Two? Why? Needless to say, One was a little thrown for a loop by Two’s actions, especially since he seemed to be under the impression that his interest in her was requited. Then again, Two did pull away from him when One kissed her. Mixed signals much? Or maybe this is the kind of story where the nice guy finishes last…maybe.
One and Three did, however, manage to hash out their differences during a lull in their space zombie attack and One was even able to declare his feelings for Two. One and Three also played a tit-for-tat game of saving each other’s lives and then letting each other know that they did so, which was kind of funny given their tense rapport with each other. Are they friends now? Hardly, but I think it’s safe to say they have an understanding going forward now, especially when it comes to Two.
Two Is Attacked
We all know that Two can hold her own in a fight, but nothing could prepare her to go toe-to-toe with a space zombie, if that’s what you can call it. During a so-called “makeup mission” for a client that they don’t remember having, Two found herself face-to-face with a zombie that ended up biting her on the neck. After learning that the abandoned freighter was sent on a failed mission to a planet where a pharmaceutical company was developing a drug that would make humans immortal but inadvertently turned them into zombies, her fate was pretty much sealed. Or was it? As it turns out, whatever virus she was infected with didn’t stand a chance. The question is why.
The Cliffhanger
This week on Dark Matter, the cliffhanger revolved around Two. After being cleared during a second virus scan, Two was finally released from quarantine. And though much of the group was skeptical that she was really ok to be released—except for One, of course—she was allowed to leave isolation. It was kind of funny how Four (the pathological killer/martial artist) kept wanting to “put her out of her misery” well before she even showed any signs of infection, though. But what do you expect from a pathological killer? On her way back to her own quarters, after being rejected by Three, the cliffhanger unfolded when Two removed the bandage from her neck to reveal that her zombie bite had completely healed on its own. So, they aren’t human?
Could the Dark Matter writers be confirming that The Raza crew are indeed clones? If not, what other explanation could there be that would explain how the crew members look exactly like other people (i.e. Jace versus Jace) and possess healing powers (Two’s miraculous recovery from the zombie bite)? It s a slow process, but things are coming together episode by episode, and hopefully the big reveal will be something worth waiting for. Stay tuned, folks. I know I will.
Dark Matter airs Friday nights at 10:00pm EST on Syfy. Here’s a sneak peek at next week’s episode.
