Poor Marvel. Nothing just seems to go wrong for the comic book company turned box office powerhouse, and that includes the recent success on the small screen with Daredevil on Netflix. Too bad it’s not what everybody at Marvel wants. Wait, what?
According to Umberto Gonzalez over at Heroic Hollywood, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed that the only reason Marvel is even pursuing TV shows is because Disney made them do it. The Marvel exec apparently went so far as to refer to the entire venture as a “necessary evil.” Ouch.
You know what that means right? That means that if it weren’t for Disney we wouldn’t have Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., that amazing first season of Daredevil or any of the upcoming subsequent Marvel comics inspired Netflix shows like A.K.A. Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, coming down the pipeline. And for sure we wouldn’t have the Netflix tie-in show next year, The Defenders. Try that on for size, ladies and gentlemen; Disney does make dreams come true, like for real. *Mind blown*
Where Is A.K.A. Jessica Jones?
Speaking of A.K.A. Jessica Jones, if you’re looking for a Doctor Who type mystery then by all means try to Google the release date on Netflix. You’ll find more run around then in a Sherlock Holmes movie. Netflix and Marvel TV have been so tight-lipped about a release date that some are beginning to speculate that the first lady of Marvel TV—at least on Netflix, remember that official honor goes to Agent Carter—won’t debut until later this year; possibly even the very end, like December. If that is indeed the case, it could have quite a few implications on the rest of the Marvel TV shows, starting with release dates for the remaining Netflix shows being pushed back and possible impacts on storyline tie-ins.
We already know that things haven’t exactly gone according to the initial plans to have all the Marvel TV shows on Netflix tie into one another as evidenced by the lack of guest appearances on Daredevil. Other than the casting of Krysten Ritter (of Don’t Trust the B**** in Apartment 23 fame) in the title role for A.K.A. Jessica Jones, we knew nothing more regarding casting at the time Daredevil was in production. Unfortunately, other than more casting updates and a production announcement back in February that’s still the case for the most part. But then again, it does lend to more excitement and intrigue surrounding the upcoming series.
Marvel TV Phase 2 Coming in 2017
While we impatiently wait for A.K.A Jessica Jones, Marvel is apparently making more plans for Marvel TV. Gonzalez revealed that Marvel has begun planning for a Marvel TV phase 2 to hit Netflix in 2017. The Defenders miniseries will commence the second phase and will be followed up by the highly anticipated second season of Daredevil, which is rumored to introduce Elektra. Phase 2 might potentially include a series featuring dark Marvel comics characters like Punisher, Ghost Rider and Blade. Avengers movies heroes Hawkeye and Black Widow could also potentially get smaller projects, namely a movie or limited series, so as to avoid character commitments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While nothing has yet been confirmed, by the looks of things Marvel TV is sure shaping up to be quite a viable competitor for DC TV, despite reluctance to enter the TV market to begin with.
Do you think Marvel has a real shot to outpace DC TV with the Netflix shows?
