Wednesday night’s Firefall crawl had me trying out one of the new milestone patch campaigns in Blackwater. January marked a critical new path for Firefall with a direction that is building towards an official release in 2014 and taking the title out of beta. Keeping the sandbox feel, while simultaneously addressing issues like durability, advancement, and delaying the end game with more content and better builds, is a hard balance to strike. There are going to be more hits and misses, but Firefall is still very much worth the investment of time and energy, as long as it stays fun.
My personal dislikes lean more towards a lack of initial intuition on what to do and where to go, outside of plopping down a thumper, but it is easy to be immersed if you already know where to go. Aero tries her hardest to keep you updated, but storyline wise, I need a point A to be interested in point B. Maybe it’s there and I’ve missed it, but that becomes sort of the point, too. Once I started to follow the campaign, I did feel a part of the process, not just an observer. Well done, and I look forward to doing more content and campaigns in the near future.
